On this historic day of 15th August 2024, India commemorated its 78th Independence Day with pride, reflection, and a vision for the future. The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Viksit Bharat @ 2047,” underscoring the government’s ambitious goal of transforming India into a fully developed nation by the centenary of its independence.
The Red Fort Ceremony
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the festivities from the iconic Red Fort in Delhi. Against the backdrop of the majestic monument, he unfurled the National Flag, symbolizing the resilience and unity of the Indian people. The Red Fort, with its centuries-old walls, echoed with the spirit of freedom fighters who once stood there, envisioning a sovereign India.
The Vision for 2047
In his address to the nation, PM Modi declared that India was entering its “golden era.” His vision for 2047—a mere 23 years away—is one of a prosperous, technologically advanced, and socially inclusive India. He emphasized the need to overcome obstacles and challenges with unwavering determination. “This is India’s golden era,” he proclaimed, “and 2047 awaits our Viksit Bharat.” The mantra he shared: “24/7 for 2047,” signifying relentless commitment to progress.
Unity and Inclusivity
PM Modi called for “One Nation, One Election,” urging all political parties and stakeholders to unite behind this idea. Frequent elections, he noted, hinder the country’s progress. He also addressed the negative impact of nepotism and casteism in politics, advocating for a more merit-based and inclusive system.
The Quest for a Secular Civil Code
In a significant push for a Uniform Civil Code, PM Modi labelled the existing code as divisive. He stressed the urgency of adopting a secular civil code—one that transcends religious boundaries and ensures equal rights for all citizens. “It is the need of the hour,” he asserted, “to be free of discrimination based on religion.”
Celebrations Beyond Borders
India’s diaspora worldwide joined in the celebrations. From Athens to Washington, Indian communities hoisted the tricolour, sang patriotic songs, and remembered their homeland. The Indian Embassy in the United States hosted a vibrant event, reinforcing the bonds between India and its global citizens.
A Journey of Resilience
As the sun set over the Red Fort, the echoes of “Jana Gana Mana” lingered—a reminder of India’s journey from colonial subjugation to sovereign nationhood. The 78th Independence Day serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring every Indian to contribute to the dream of a Viksit Bharat.
Happy Independence Day, India! May our tricolour fly high, and may your spirit soar even higher.
